Abu Dhabi celebrates Kuppens the 2013 Trofeo Maserati champion

In the run up to the championship, everyone knew that Renaud Kuppens was the man to beat. He was the quickest, most consistent driver in 2102 and made very few mistakes. His domination of this season’s European rounds continued last year’s form and left him well set for another world title. Even so, going into Abu Dhabi, the figures still gave Mikkel Mac an outside shot. However, Kuppens kept his cool and, despite a difficult first race, he collected the points that saw him to the title. He went on to celebrate with a win in Race 2 but it was Barde who topped the podium in the endurance event.
Barde has been the driver who seems to have mastered the longer races from Sonoma on. Here he beat his close rival, Mikkel Mac, into second with third going to Mauro Calamia, a driver whose misfortune played a part in his not having a bigger say in the destiny of the title. So, Kuppens was the star of the show with seven pole positions and eight wins. The Trofeo’s king has been crowned.

Cecchellero, a spectacular pole
The only driver, aside from Kuppens, who has claimed two pole positions this season is Andrea Cecchellero. Here in Abu Dhabi he claimed top spot on the grid just as he did at Silverstone.
