Andrea Bertolini: “I live for racing and for winning. Even though this is my first year in this series and after I missed a race in round one, I have never stopped thinking about the title. Winning in my debut season is very satisfying. I have always been confident that I could do it and never gave up hope, not even during the tough weekends at Monza, Misano and Mugello. This faith comes from my experience in different series where I have competed up until the very last lap; this goes for when I have won and when I have lost. After really stepping on the gas in Race 1, I eased up a bit in the second race. This was to keep the tyres in good shape right to the finish. Having good tyres meant that I was able to hold off Gianni Morbidelli on the last lap after he had made a great comeback. In truth, I wasn’t sure whether to keep him behind me or let him past. Taking second would have also given me the title and would have been less risky. In the end, I decided to defend my position. Towards the end, I was checking my rear-view mirror more than keeping an eye on the track ahead because I was worried that we would clash. Now I would just like to dedicate my title to the owner of Swiss Team, Guido Bonfiglio, first of all. He has invested hugely in the past two years to race the Maseratis. This year he has put together a great squad that has benefited from the technical know-how of Giuseppe Angiulli and the support of Maserati Corse, under Maurizio Leschiutta. I would also like to thank my team mate, Pier Guidi, who has always watched my back, taking away a lot of the stress”.
Pier Guidi: "We gave 110%"
Alessandro Pier Guidi: “A second and a third place behind Bertolini, and ahead of his main title rivals, is a good result. I would have liked to have held onto the second place I nicked at the start but, with a 40kg weight handicap on board, it was impossible to hold Morbidelli off, especially as he wasn’t carrying any extra weight. I opted not to take any stupid risks because all of Bertolini’s rivals were pretty far down the field. Pigoli got past me two laps from the finish but I retook third when his tyres started giving out and he started having technical problems. I would like to thank Guido Bonfiglio for the opportunity he has given us to race for his team this year. We have always given our all, just like he has. I think we gave 110% in this race”.
