The reigning champions clocked the fourth best time at the end of qualifying in what is the second round of the FIA GT1 World Championship. It is the first time that the starting grid has been decided using this new system, one similar to Formula 1 with three elimination sessions. In round one of the 2010 season at Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, qualifying was suspended and later interrupted after Natacha Gachnang was involved in a serious accident
This morning, all four Maseratis made it into Q2: in the first twenty minutes, Matteo Bobbi set the third fastest time, closely followed by Margartis (fourth). Bertolini was seventh and Bernoldi eighth. In the end it was only Bertolini who made it through to the final eight minutes of Q3, a session in which the two Aston Martins came out on top with, respectively, Turner/Enge and Makowiecki/Accary. The leading crews were undoubtedly helped by the FIA's decision to remove 50kg of ballast from their cars. So, Bartels/Bertolini's No.1 MC12 will start from fourth spot. In twelfth will be Bobbi/Longin (Triple H Team Hegersport); thirteenth, Bernoldi/Ramos and fourteenth, Margaritis/Heger.
