This came thanks to their second place behind winners Gollin/Hezemans. The 2006 champions turned on the style throughout the race: Fässler moved into an early lead but Bertolini had snatched top spot by lap four and carved out a slight gap over the Swiss driver. The MC12 seemed set to claim the win but its hopes were dashed with a drive through on lap 62 following an infraction on the starting grid (that also involved the other MC12).
The penalty saw the crew lose half a minute but the Maserati still managed to place second. The pairing held off Deletraz/Fässler and put pressure on Gollin who, despite feeling the heat, held things together to seal victory. The second Vitaphone Racing Team Maserati, crewed by Alexander Negraõ and Miguel Ramos, had 55kg of ballast on board and was forced to pit on lap 13 for running repairs; the stop cost them seven laps.
In mounting a comeback, Negraõ clocked a fastest lap time of 1’12”858 but, despite his efforts, the crew finished out of the points. The third MC12 (JMB Racing), secured a fine result as Alain Ferté and Ben Aucott finished seventh to claim their first two points of the 2008 season. Bertolini/Bartels are now in overall command of the Drivers’ championship and are looking ahead to the 6 July meet at Oschersleben in Germany for what will be the Vitaphone Racing team’s home race.
