Bertolini, having twice lowered the best lap time, was overtaken by the chasing pack after running off line at ‘Lucien Bianchi’. Even so, he posted a time only .547 down on Simonsen’s pole. The qualifying session was an even one with seven cars grouped within a second of each other.
The Vitasystem MC12, making its debut with Matteo Bobbi and Pedro Lamy on board, clocked a time one second down on pole, good enough for tenth. Ramos/Negraõ, winners in Nogaro and with 65 kg of ballast, were eleventh and 1"107 off pole.
