Good qualifying comeback in the wet for Negraõ
Silverstone – The weather conditions made things difficult in official qualifying for the Tourist Trophy, a race that counted as the first round of the FIA-GT.
The session was held up for about fifteen minutes because of the heavy rain, a factor that forced the teams to switch tyres. The two Team Vitaphone Maserati MC12s, with Ramos/Negraõ and Bertolini/Bartels on board, had a tougher session than expected and could not match the morning’s free practice performance when Bertolini set the 3rd best time and Negraõ the 4th.
Despite this, the team managed to find the right set up by the end of the stint. This was also thanks to the tyres coming up to temperature, something that allowed Negraõ to set 1’56”647, good enough for eighth spot on the grid. Even with traffic on the track, Negraõ did superbly on a final lap that showed how much the MC12 has in store for tomorrow’s race.
Andrea Bertolini closed out in 15th place with a time of 2’00”005, a lap time conditioned by the rain but that will surely be improved during the race. The Monaco based JMB Racing team will fill a spot on row 12 after their MC12 clocked 2’06”683 courtesy of gentleman drivers Peter Kutemann and Ben Aucott. The pair will be out to defend the Citation Cup, reserved to non-professionals, won in 2007.
