The Maserati MC12 crewed by Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini claimed its second pole of the season (after that claimed at Oschersleben in Germany). The fast time was set on lap eight, just a minute before the end of the session.
The time of 1'48"436 set by Andrea Bertolini saw the MC12 beat off the challenge of Bert-Montermini-Janis' Saleen S7 R (1'48"672). On row two is another Maserati MC12, fielded by the Scuderia Playteam and with Vilander-Giannoccaro-Pier Guidi (1'49"109) at the wheel. The crew are also current leaders of the Italian GT championship.
The third fastest time was set by the young Finn Toni Vilander. On row four is the second Vitaphone Racing Team Maserati MC12 driven by Jamie Davies-Thomas Biagi (1'49"776). Official qualifying was held on a damp track that slowly dried out as the twenty minute session wore on. Having started with Pirelli PZero intermediate tyres, the Maserati MC12 teams pulled into the pit to switch to slicks. This change allowed them to go on and improve their times on the Scarperia track. The three hour race will start tomorrow, Sunday 17 September, at 13.30.
